About Ohio South

Goals1(3)

Ohio South Youth Soccer Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and affiliate member of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS). We are proud to service the needs of the youth soccer landscape in central and southern Ohio - from just north of Dayton and Columbus to the borders of West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana. In June 2019, this equated to roughly 56,000 players, 8,000+ coaches, and over 200 leagues and clubs across four districts (Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Athens/Marietta).

Districts.1

Ohio South is structured in a manner in which our competitive and recreational leagues are our voting members and competitive clubs are an affiliate member. Through us, our membership has access to many great and exciting benefits and features - from player insurance to coaching education to entry into the USYS National Championship Series.

Ohio South is also home to one of the largest Olympic Development Programs (ODP) in the United States. In 2018, we announced a exciting partnership with one of two Major League Soccer (MLS) affiliates in our territory, FC Cincinnati, and Ohio South ODP. Ohio South has also enjoyed close ties with the Columbus Crew for many years - a relationship we continue to strengthen.

Ohio South has traditionally carried a strong geographical soccer culture and tradition - something we strive to keep alive and are fiercely #ohsoproud of!

What We Do

Carding and Registration: Carding is limited to the competitive side of soccer and is required in order for coaches and players to be allowed on the sidelines. The carding process involves Age/ID Verification of all players in Ohio South. It also involves the assignment of a unique Player ID number that feeds all the way back to U.S. Soccer and FIFA - the governing body of global soccer!

Coaches are not Age/ID Verified, but must meet certain requirements in order to coach, such as concussion training, SafeSport certification and be cleared by our background check.

Ohio South currently cards to 6 competitive leagues; Great Lakes Conference (GLC), Ohio South State League (OSSL), Buckeye Premier Youth Soccer League (BPYSL), Greater Cincinnati Soccer League (GCSL), Miami Valley Youth Soccer Association (MVYSA), and Mid-Ohio Select Soccer League (MOSSL).

Risk Management: Ohio South prides itself on helping create safe places for kids to play. Risk Management - newly branded "SafeSoccer" - involves our responsibility to ensure that none of our member leagues or clubs are taking unnecessary risks. Additionally, we take the legal liability of our member leagues and clubs for Lindsay's Law, Ohio Concussion Law, and SafeSport off their plate and onto ours when in full SafeSoccer compliance. Finally, all coaches and identified adults are background checked through Ohio South.

Cup Series | USYS National Championship Series (NCS)/Presidents Cup/Governors Cup: As a member of an Ohio South competitive league, club teams have the opportunity to participate in the NCS (State Cup), Presidents Cup or Governors Cup. These competitions take place from the end of April to the end of July (if team qualifies for Nationals). Both the NCS and the Presidents Cup carry potential qualification to Regionals, and from Regionals to Nationals, depending on how the team performs. Regional (Midwest) and National competitions are hosted in various locations each year.

The Governors Cup is a newly launched member (2019) of the Ohio South Cup Series, which allows teams to participate in a State-run tournament against similar-level competition without the requirement to attend a regional competition if successful.

ODP: Our Olympic Development Program (ODP) offers players in Ohio South the opportunity for competitive training and quality coaching outside their club. Our ODP program has direct ties to college coaches in Ohio, the FC Cincinnati Development Academy, and U.S. Soccer. Ohio South ODP occurs in five Phases, with each phase narrowing the overall pool of players until the best are left.

  • Phase I: District Training
  • Phase II: District Festival
  • Phase III: State Pool
  • Phase IV: Sub-Regional Event
  • Phase V: Midwest Region ID Camp

Coaching Education: We offer educational opportunities to those who are interested in coaching; from 'Beginner' to 'Intermediate', and even occasionally 'Advanced' coaching courses. We partner with both U.S. Soccer Coaching Education and United Soccer Coaches to provide their respective courses at a location near you.

If you are interested in pursuing additional coaching education and are just beginning, we encourage you to start at the U.S. Soccer Digital Learning Center by taking the Introduction course (free).

More: We are always seeking further benefits for our membership...so stay tuned!
